What to see in Porto
The Ribeira, on the banks of the Douro, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site: colourful houses, terraces and the Dom Luís I bridge. Uphill, the Cathedral (Sé), the Clérigos Tower and São Bento station, with its tiled panels, complete the walk. Livraria Lello is one of the most beautiful bookshops in the world.
Across the river, Vila Nova de Gaia is home to the port wine cellars, where the wine that made the city famous is aged. Towards the sea, Foz do Douro has a promenade and beaches.
When to go
From May to October the weather is on your side; in June, São João night is the city's biggest party. Winter is rainy but quiet.
Getting around
The centre is small but hilly. The metro reaches the airport and Gaia (across the bridge), and there are heritage trams and a funicular by the Ribeira.
What to eat
The francesinha, bacalhau, tripas à moda do Porto and, of course, a port wine tasting: tawny, ruby or white.
Travel tips
- A six bridges cruise is the easiest way to see the city from the river.
- Book a cellar tour with tasting in Gaia.
- Spend a day in the Douro Valley, with terraced vineyards and quintas.
