What to see in Lisbon
Alfama, the oldest quarter, climbs through alleys up to São Jorge Castle. The viewpoints of Santa Luzia, Graça and Senhora do Monte look over the rooftops and the Tagus. The Baixa and Praça do Comércio show the Lisbon rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, and Chiado and Bairro Alto are the heart of the nightlife.
Belém is home to the Jerónimos Monastery, the Belém Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries. LX Factory and the MAAT show the city's most creative side.
When to go
Spring and autumn are perfect. Summer is hot but with an Atlantic breeze; in June the Popular Saints festivities fill the streets with sardines and music.
Getting around
Metro, trams, elevators and funiculars help with the hills. There are trains to Sintra and Cascais, and ferries across the Tagus.
What to eat
Pastéis de nata (the ones from Belém are the most famous), salt cod in any of its recipes, grilled sardines, bifanas and a glass of ginjinha.
Travel tips
- Listen to fado in a fado house in Alfama or Bairro Alto.
- Keep a day for Sintra, with the Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira.
- A sunset boat trip on the Tagus is a great way to see the city.
