What to see in Seville
The Cathedral, with the Giralda tower, and the Real Alcázar, a Mudéjar palace with dreamlike gardens, form the monumental heart. Close by, the Santa Cruz quarter is a maze of lanes, patios and orange-tree squares.
Plaza de España and María Luisa Park were built for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition. Across the Guadalquivir, Triana is the neighbourhood of ceramics, markets and flamenco. Las Setas (Metropol Parasol) offers a modern view over the rooftops.
When to go
Spring and autumn are ideal. Holy Week and the April Fair are unique experiences, but the city is packed. In July and August temperatures often exceed 40 °C.
Getting around
The historic centre is compact and best enjoyed on foot or by bike. There are trams, a metro line and buses; Santa Justa station connects with Madrid and Córdoba.
What to eat
Tapas above all: salmorejo, spinach with chickpeas, fried fish, montaditos and Iberian ham. A rebujito or a glass of fino goes well with them.
Travel tips
- Visit the Alcázar first thing and save the riverside walk for sunset.
- A flamenco show in a tablao or a peña is a must.
- With an extra day, Córdoba and its Mosque-Cathedral are very close.
