What to see in Rome

Ancient Rome is centred on the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill. Nearby, the Pantheon still stands almost two thousand years later, and the Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona and the Spanish Steps mark a walk through baroque Rome.

The Vatican holds St Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel, with Michelangelo's frescoes. Across the Tiber, Trastevere is the district of trattorias and ivy-covered lanes.

When to go

April, May, September and October are ideal. Summer is hot and busy; winter is quieter and cheaper. Keep religious holidays in mind, as they draw many visitors.

Getting around

The historic centre is walkable. The metro has few lines but reaches the Colosseum and the Vatican area; buses and trams complete the network. There is a direct train from the airport to Termini.

What to eat

The four Roman classics: carbonara, cacio e pepe, amatriciana and gricia. Also pizza al taglio, supplì and a good artisan gelato.

Travel tips

  1. A guided tour of the Colosseum with arena or underground access changes the experience.
  2. Visit the Vatican Museums first thing or late in the day to avoid peak hours.
  3. With an extra day, Pompeii and Florence are possible day trips from Rome.
